MOLA, Pier Francesco
Italian Baroque Era Painter, 1612-1666
Painter and draughtsman, son of (1) Giovanni Battista Mola. His most characteristic works are small, intensely romantic scenes from mythology, the Bible, and from works by the poet Torquato Tasso, set in landscapes inspired by Venetian art. Yet he also received important public commissions for frescoes and altarpieces, and in his mature work he achieved an impressive synthesis of 17th-century Roman gran maniera painting with the stronger chiaroscuro and richer palette of the 16th-century Venetian style. He was a prolific and versatile draughtsman, who drew for pleasure as well as in preparation for commissions; he was also a witty caricaturist, who mocked himself and his friends as much as more typical targets Related Paintings of MOLA, Pier Francesco :. | Herminia and Vafrino Tending the Wounded Tancred (mk05) | Self-portrait | Jacob's Meeting with Rachel | Herminie gardant ses troupeaux grave sur un arbre le nom de Tancrede | St Peter Freed from Prison dh | Related Artists: Homer WatsonCanadian Painter, 1855-1936
Canadian painter. The son of a mill-owner, he was born in a region of rural southern Ontario, which he painted throughout his life. In 1874 he moved to Toronto to work at the Notman Photographic Studios; he also spent many hours copying paintings in the Toronto Normal School in order to improve his technique. In 1876 he visited New York, where he was impressed with the carefully composed paintings of the Hudson River school and the rural scenes of George Inness, who encouraged Watson to pursue his career. The following year he returned to Doon to work up his New York sketches into finished paintings. A work of this early period, Landscape with River (1878; Toronto, A.G.
